Production Process
- Casting
Pattern making: A pattern of the V-belt pulley is first created. This pattern is usually made of wood, plastic, or metal and has the exact shape and dimensions of the desired pulley. It includes details such as the grooves for the V-belt, the hub, and the flange.
For example, if the pulley is to have a specific number of grooves (say, 3 or 4 for a multi-groove pulley), the pattern will have the corresponding grooves with the correct angle and depth to match the V-belt cross-section.
- Molding
The pattern is then used to create a mold. In sand casting, a two - part sand mold is typically made. The pattern is placed in a flask, and sand is packed around it. One part of the mold forms the outer shape of the pulley, and the other part forms the inner cavities such as the hub. After the mold is made, the pattern is removed, leaving a cavity in the shape of the pulley.
- Pouring
Molten metal, such as cast iron, aluminum, or bronze, is then poured into the mold. The choice of metal depends on the requirements of the pulley, such as its strength, weight, and resistance to corrosion.
For example, aluminum pulleys are often used in applications where weight is a critical factor, like in some small - scale machinery. The metal fills the mold cavity and takes the shape of the pulley as it cools and solidifies.

Once the metal has solidified, the casting is removed from the mold. The pulley may then have rough edges and surfaces due to the casting process. These are trimmed and smoothed through machining operations such as grinding and milling. The grooves for the V-belts are also machined to ensure the correct dimensions and surface finish to provide a good grip for the belts.
